A couple of years ago, my company's bank account was starting to look a bit ropey, with too many minuses and not enough pluses.

I should have spotted it earlier, but I was caught up in the rush of growing the business, and moving up in the world.

Doing bigger deals looked good on paper, but our cash flow was an absolute shit show.

Bigger clients wanted net 60 on our invoices, then pushed it to 70 or 80 days, and our receivables were lagging over $100k each month.

I let them get away with it, because I wasn't ready for the hard conversations that every business owner needs to have.

Now, I love a good spreadsheet, and all the info I needed to see the problem was right in front of my eyes...

But my ego was so tied up in 'playing the big game' that I wasn't honest with myself about what was going on.

So the situation festered away, until the obvious happened.

A Monday morning arrived when I needed to find 100k by Friday, or miss payroll.

This was life or death for the business, so I kicked my own arse into action, FAST.

I got on the phone and personally spoke to current clients, past clients, and every lead in our CRM.

I barely slept the whole week, working every waking minute from sunrise to sunset, with the phone glued to my ear…

And miraculously managed to scrape together even more than the 100k we needed.

It felt amazing and I was more than a bit shocked I had pulled it off.

Because if I’m honest - on that Monday morning, I had been shitting myself.

Having that 'gun to the head' experience was one of the best things that ever happened to me…

It showed me that I was capable of much more, that I’d been cruising along way below my true capability.

And it scared me straight, making me relentless about managing cashflow and always knowing the numbers.
